Written September '13

Barely one year after the demise of his Press secretary Babatunde Carter Ogunkorede, Dr.Olusegun Agagu former Governor of the south western state of Ondo yesterday(Friday 13th,2013) slumped in his Ikoyi,Lagos residence and died before he could get medical help. This incident occurred less than 24hours after he returned to the country from a trip abroad where he was said to have sought medical attention.
Born on February 16, 1948 Dr. Agagu was sworn in as Governor of Ondo state on May29,2003 after serving in President Obasanjo's cabinet as his first Minister of Aviation between May 1999-2001. The professional geologist was sworn-in for his second term in office in 2007 but that was short lived as he was booted out in February 2009 for electoral malpractice during his reelection.
Agagu's death comes on the heels of massive crisis in his party where he is being fingered to be one of the lifelines of the embattled President GEJ. He is the second Governor in post military era Ondo state who have lost his life following the demise of Adebayo Adefarati in 2007. Dr. Agagu was also the deputy Governor to Bamidele Olumilua in the defunct third republic.

However things have not usually been rosy for the classy Ikare native. Asides his electoral travails and battle with former associate, Olusegun Mimiko who is the present Governor of the state, Agagu has also been involved in alleged financial mismanagement. He has been having a running trial in the hands of the country anti corruption body EFCC. Also in September 2008,he was summoned by the Nigerian Senate on account of certain discrepancies discovered during his tenure as Aviation Minister.

Dr. Olusegun Kokumo Agagu had his elementary education in his native Okitipupa in Ondo state, northern state of Kano before moving to Ibadan where he had his post primary education. The former Governor was admitted to studied Botany in University of Ibadan but changed his course to Geology where he graduated with a second class upper division in 1971. He later moved on to the University of Texas where he obtained his masters degree in geology then crowned his education with a Ph.D in Petroleum Geology at his alma mater- the University of Ibadan.

He is the third of the post military former Governors from the south west region to have lost their lives. Asides his predecessor Adebayo Adefarati, a former Oyo state governor Alhaji Lam Adesina also died less than a year ago.

Prominent Nigerians including President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been offering their condolences to his family and the people of Ondo state in general. Ondo Governor Olusegun Mimiko has also expressed shock overthe suden demise of the late politician.

Dr. Olusegun Agagu was 65years, he is survived by his wife Olufunke of almost 40years and children.
